For fiscal year 2005, the Abandoned Property Division collected approximately $214 million, the third consecutive year the Division has collected over the $200 million mark. It is estimated that one person in every ten has abandoned property. According to the Massachusetts Abandoned Property Laws, most financial assets that have been inactive for more than three years are declared "abandoned" and turned over to the Commonwealth. Additionally, the Treasury receives the contents of safe deposit boxes that have been held in "Special Deposit" for seven years by financial organization, government agencies and other public institutions. The Treasury attempts to locate the owners or their heirs by sending notice to the last known address of the box owner, advertising the names in local papers and an aggressive outreach program. If an owner is located the property is returned. If not, the personal property is appraised and put up for public auction. The proceeds form the sales of this form of property remain available for rightful owners to claim.

Since its inception in 1987 the Great Colorado Payback has returned more than $100 million to the residents (and former residents) of our state. Last year the Great Colorado Payback program returned approximately $9 million in unclaimed property to the rightful owners and heirs.
Some items received by our office are the result of abandoned safe deposit boxes. Safe deposit boxes are turned over to the State from Colorado banks after a safe deposit box has been abandoned for five years. After holding the items for about five years, unclaimed items - from safe deposit items that have been sent to the state - are sometimes auctioned to the highest bidder. The proceeds from the sale are held in perpetuity by the State for the owners or heirs.

Since 1999 the Indiana Attorney General has returned more than $100 million in unclaimed property to its rightful owners. According to Indiana Code 32-34-1-29, personal property and money that has gone unclaimed for certain lengths of time must be turned over to the Indiana Attorney General's Unclaimed Property Division.
The items you will find here are the contents of unclaimed safe deposit boxes. Under Indiana law, personal property from safe deposit boxes must be held for five years by the original holder- usually financial institutions, government agencies or other public organizations. After that time, they must be reported to the attorney general's office where they are appraised upon receipt and publicly auctioned. Proceeds from the auction are held by the state for 25 years for the rightful owners or heirs to claim.
